Visual storytelling: Ike the Alien cat

Sorry for being such a slacker at posting… I neglected my Wacom for some time this vacation, and I noticed that I had to come back from the dead if you know what I mean… kinda lost my mojo.
But I’m kinda back on tracks now and I want to specialize myself in illustrations that tell a story, visual storytelling. This is work in progress, it is a nice neighborhood where ‘Ike the Alian cat’ is looking around for a place to sleep. Ike’s is not yet there in this piece but he will be there soon. I’m still not satisfied, it is missing a lot and I can’t exactly say what it is…

Tiny insects and a because

I love making photo’s of small things that most people don’t notice. When I was little I used to play with ants, I was observing them and was trying to help them (what probably wasn’t really helpful). I noticed that the ants where “milking” the greenfly’s, it was is if it where their own cow’s. So I have made a few photo’s of ants milking greenfly’s, it gives me a nostalgic feeling.

Also I found a piece of paper with a Dutch text on it: ‘omdat’, which means ‘because’. I will leave that one open for interpretation :)

A little big update

 A little big update here,
The past couple of months I’ve worked on a  school project “playing with bees”, we created a concept called “the Honeyshop”. This is a platform where bees and humans can connect with each other. For this project I did some research on emotions on humans, animals and insects and I did most of the artwork.

This is some of project work, I made these for my best friend. One is a portrait of her with her turtle, one is a baby turtle just hatched. That one was for her big sister whom just had a little baby girl.

These are backgrounds for the animations of the promotional movies

These are some designs of the “Honeyshop”

Emotions and Animals

Hello again, sorry for being such a slacker in posting. But I was mainly doing my research about emotion in humans and animals, which had in result that my art-activities where inactive for some time. But I must say, my findings of my research where very interesting.

According to doctor Bermond from the university of Amsterdam, most animals have a 'non-reflective consciousness, a consciousness without past or future. They experience only the here and now. And because an animal cannot reflect on his experiences and cannot imagine. He has no feelings and cannot suffer, is his reasoning.

"If a human loses a child, a intense grief and suffering is followed. This is because one can imagine what life was like when the child was alive, or how empty the future would be without him. Our consciousness ensures that long after the emotional moment of the event is behind us, we can continue to experience those feelings. If a lioness her young is murdered by the new alpha male, she experiences no depression, and does not mourn the event. After several days, she even mates with the same alpha male who has killed her young. "(Neut, 2005)

We humans experience emotions more complex because our prefrontal cortex is the most developed. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for regulating and inhibiting emotions, but also allows us the opportunity to relativize and to fantasize. Furthermore, emotion is a snapshot in which man perceived reality compares with its desires, but that snapshot, we can always relive because we have the brain power to look forward and backward.

Sorry for the peeps who liked to see some art, ill post something tomorrow :)

Rachet & Clank concept art was a inspiration ^^
So this smuggle floggle, is based on that art style!

Smuggle droggle is a dragon species that belongs to the class molluscs (Mollusca).
Contrary to other molluscs, this spiecies does have a spine, skull and bones in the upper body.

They can breathe toxic fumes that serves as a defense, but they can also spread pheromones through their breath to attract male Smuggle droggle's to reproduce.

The female has to acidifies the male Smuggle droggle alive, after that the female takes the remaining liquid that is left so it can lay eggs.

inking

I was just sketching in the train (battery’s of the laptop where dead again -_-)
And a few interesting monster like creatures came out of that, this is one sketch I have lined out.
I have no idea why it puts rocks on other smelly rocks, I still have to divine that :P thought it would be funny if it tries to hide his own poop because other creatures would find him and eat him, or something like that...
But maybe some of my followers have better creative ideas ^^

Character Design and Neuro science and Affactieve science

For a school project we have to design an experience for humans and bees (yes you read that right, also for the bees).
It would be an experience for both with a focus on narrative and play design, also humans should be aware of the ecosystem after this experience.

It is certainly a challenge because we also should reach 50,000 people and 50,000 bees.
For this project I have to write a paper, this paper is one of the parts to be judged before I get my approval to be accepted at the Master of Creative Design for Digital Cultures.

As a Character Designer, it is important that you anticipate to the emotions of the viewer/player. We do this through believable characters who show emotions that we humans ourselves can identify with. During this project I try to anticipate the "emotions" of bees, but to do so I must answer the question whether bees on their way, can experience an emotion and whether we can influence it.

For this I will be researching Neuro science and Affactieve science to perhaps be able to find a scientific explanation for emotion and also to assign it to the bees. In this way I try to capture an image of how bees see this world, feel and experience it and if there is even an emotion present in the bees.

This research will be useful not only for this project, but also for my own development as a Character Designer it will form a solid foundation.

So get ready for a little less art and a lot of Neuro science and Affactieve science :P

The odd Life of May McKenzie

This is a project I've worked on during my internship at Visual Impact. It was a concept for a beat e’m up game.

May McKenzie has a very tough life, because every day she is in a fight with someone or a group of people. She don’t know why people spontaneously want a fight her.
Her goal is to lead a normal life and to find out why people are always attacking her.
